Mecca Stampede: Nigeria death toll rises to 64 as NAHCON identifies more bodies

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) on Tuesday said 10 more corpses of deceased Nigerian pilgrims had been identified, bringing the number of pilgrims who died at Mina stampede, to 64. Giving newsmen update on the incident in Mecca, Alhaji Uba Mana, the Director, Public Affairs of the commission, said 244 pilgrims had been declared missing.

Sepp Blatter says he will not stand down as Fifa president because of the criminal proceedings opened against him by Swiss investigators. The Swiss, 79, is suspected of signing a contract that was “unfavourable to Fifa” and making a “disloyal payment” to Uefa president Michel Platini. Blatter, who had already said he will stand down in February 2016, claimed he “had done nothing illegal or improper.”

A Rivers State High Court has sentenced one Inspector Samuel Timothy of the Nigeria Police to death by hanging for shooting and killing a sachet water dealer, Onyekachi Nwasouba. The court’s ruling is coming about five years after Nwasouba’s murder by the police at about 5am on November 10, 2010 at No. 34, Old Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

New Age: BlackBerry CEO says the worst is over

BlackBerry Chief Executive John Chen said the company has found the low-point of its turnaround after second-quarter revenue plummeted and smartphone shipments hit their lowest since at least 2007.
