Transporters under the aegis of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) yesterday barricaded Ilorin/Ajase- Ipo highway in Kwara State to protest the alleged killing of their chairman by a police officer. The officer who was part of a patrol team that mounted a road block at Ajase- Ipo allegedly fired a shot that killed the transporter identified as Akeem Laduba. The victim was the Chairman of NURTW for Kabba/Omu Aran/Igbaja axis. According to the protesting transporters, the incident happened when the deceased was trying to intervene in a disagreement between the patrol team and a commercial motorcyclist. The deceased and the police officers reportedly exchanged hot words which led to a free-for-all. It was in the process that one of the policemen fired a shot which allegedly killed the man. The Chairman of Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State, Alhaji Baba Abare, on Sunday told journalists that the Boko Haram sect attacked two Yobe towns, Fika and Ngalda, on Saturday. Abare said the militants shot sporadically at the two towns to scare away people so as to have ample opportunity to loot. He explained that the major targets of the militants were shops in which they looted several food items as well as beverages, saying, however, that no life was loss during the attack. Fika is about 150 kilometres west of Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, and shares boundary with Gombe State to the south. A resident of the area, Ibrahim Mohammed, who spoke on the telephone, said the terrorists first launched an attack on Ngalda, which is the Yobe/Gombe border town. He said they proceeded from Ngalda to Fika town, the headquarters of Fika Local Government Area of Yobe State. An Improvised Explosive Device, believed to be planted by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect, on Sunday exploded at a popular market, Gamboru Market in Maiduguri, living four persons critically injured, a member of the youth vigilance group in the town, Abba Modu, told our correspondent on the telephone. In the last 48 hours, the Borno State capital has come under the attack of the terrorists on no fewer than three occasions. On Saturday morning, the insurgents were repelled by the military when an attempt was made to invade the town. It was gathered that 16 persons were killed in that attack. On Saturday afternoon, a mosque located at the main market in the town, Monday Market, was attacked by a suicide bomber, during which 26 persons were reportedly killed and 28 others injured. The attack on Gamboru market, according to Modu, happened at about 1.30pm. This he said caused pandemonium in part of the town as people hurriedly locked up their shops and fled for safety wh

United States Secretary of State, John Kerry, was on Sunday in Geneva flown to a hospital with a broken leg following a bicycle accident in the French Alps. The spokesman for the US mission in Geneva disclosed that the secretary had broken his leg. Kerry’s Spokesman, John Kirby, also confirmed that the 71-year-old Kerry was taken by helicopter to Geneva University Hospital, where he was conscious and in stable condition with a leg injury. He said the accident occurred in Scionzier, a town near the border with Switzerland, around 9.40am. Kirby said the secretary was attended to by a physician and paramedics travelling in his motorcade. Kerry had conducted talks on Saturday in Geneva with Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, as part of ongoing efforts to forge a comprehensive agreement about Tehran’s disputed nuclear programme ahead of a June 30 deadline. He had been due to fly to Madrid later on Sunday to meet with Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and King Felipe VI.

Gunmen, numbering about five, on Sunday kidnapped the Commissioner of Land in Kogi State, Mr. Steven Mayaki. An eyewitness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told journalists in Lokoja that the five gunmen trailed and kidnapped the commissioner at his farm in Osara village, Adavi Local Government Area of the state on Sunday morning. According to him, the gunmen stormed Mayaki’s farm in a Prado Jeep, forcibly picked up the commissioner and drove away the victim away to an unknown destination. Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Adebayo Collins, confirmed the kidnap, adding that the command was doing everything possible to rescue the commissioner unhurt. Collins said, “It is true the commissioner was kidnapped but the command is on top of the matter.” The state High Court Judge, Justice Samuel Obayomi, who was kidnapped last Monday, has yet to be released. Suspected Boko Haram insurgents on May 30, 2015, reportedly stormed two Yobe towns, burning down a police station and several government buildings. Report has it that the militants attacked Ngalda and Fika towns, Fika LGA, on Saturday evening. In Ngalda they sized fuel and robbed provision stores. Then the insurgents invaded Fika. According to a resident of Fika, Malam Ahmadu Maikano, the gunmen entered the town in two hilux vans and opened fire. “They burnt down police station, local government secretariat, LEA and departments of health, works,”he said. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded. However, Maikano disclosed that the locals had been suspicious of the fighters’ advancement. “That’s why many residents didn’t sleep in Ngalda and Fika, we all fled to save places,” Maikano added. A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the Japanese coast Saturday, geologists said, shaking buildings in Tokyo and setting off car alarms, an AFP correspondent reported. Despite the huge power of the quake, there was no risk of a tsunami, The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre reported. Residential buildings swayed for around a minute as the quake built in intensity at around 8.30pm (1130 GMT). There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The epicentre was 676 kilometres (422 miles) below the Earth's surface. It was centred on a remote spot in the Pacific Ocean around 870 kilometres south of Tokyo, the US Geological Survey said. President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo have declared their assets to the Code of Conduct Bureau as required by the Constitution. The head of Buhari’s media team, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Saturday, said the President and Vice President submitted their assets declaration forms separately on Thursday. Shehu added that the CCB, through its Chairman, Sam Saba, on Friday acknowledged the receipt of the forms. He said Buhari’s declarant identity was given as: President: 000001/2015. As Muhammadu Buhari is being sworn in as Nigeria’s new president, here are photos of President Goodluck Jonathan’s Otuoke home. Although it has been reportedly said that the Nigeria’s First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan is unhappy about the decision of the outgoing president to resettle at his country home in Otuoke, Bayelsa state, after he hands over, work has been ongoing in the Otuoke home to meet up with the arrival of Jonathan. Labourers were seen putting finishing touches to five buildings at Jonathan’s residence, while two roadblocks, mounted by the operatives of Battalion 5 of the Joint Task Force Operation Pulo Shield, were situated on either side of the spacious compound. Also, movements were restricted around the premises and no one has been allowed to take photographs of the buildings. Two abducted cousins of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience Egbeni and Kate Eni, will be missing in action as the former President returns home. Nine days after their abduction by six gunmen in military uniform, Patience and Eni are still held hostage by their abductors. It was learnt that the gunmen, after about five days, established contacts with their families and demanded N50m ransom to set them free. Hundreds of youths, suspected to be members of the All Progressives Congress, on Friday laid siege to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in their desperate bid to have an audience with President Muhammadu Buhari. There was pandemonium at the Uselu Secondary School, Benin, Edo State, on Thursday when some armed men stormed the school premises and abducted a teacher, Iguodala Chosen. It was gathered that the gunmen had arrived at the school, located in the Egor Local Government Area of the state, in a vehicle at about 12.05pm and shot sporadically into the air, causing pupils and other teachers to scamper for safety. It was learnt that they forced the teacher into their vehicle, after stabbing three pupils, who tried to prevent the men from abducting their teacher. Newsmen reported that the affected students, who sustained cuts in the chest, head and arm, were later rushed to an undisclosed hospital. The students were, however, thrown into wild jubilation when the abducted teacher was seen entering the premises, when our correspondent arrived at the school at about 2pm. The Borno Police Command on Friday said six persons were killed by a sucide bomber, who attacked a venue of a wedding (Fatiha) in Tashan Alade in the Hawul Local Government Area of the state. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Aderemi Opadokun, who spoke to journalists on the telephone, said 30 people were also injured during the attack. Opadokun said, “I confirm the report on an alleged suicide bombing in Tashan Alade in Hawul LGA. The incident was reported to be at a wedding,fatiha. “Presently, six persons, all males, whose identities are unknown, are confirmed dead, while 30 others were injured.” The police commissioner added that the police had commenced investigations into the issue. Opadokun said, however, that the inauguration of Governor Kashim Shettima for a second term in office in Maiduguri was peaceful. Oritsefemi might be at war with his manager Danku, whose real names are Mr. Yusuf Adebola Adepitan. Oritsefemi has filed a petition against Danku to the Nigerian Police Force, claiming “a threat to life, fraudulent activities, and criminal conspiracy against the person and international image of Ortisefemi.“ The petition was filed on May 22, 2015 to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos state. The document states that Danku took a 2014 model E Vogue Range Rover SUV belonging to Oritsefemi without his permission and allegedly damaged it in a car accident. It also read that Danku was not able to declare the sum of N58 million, which represents the total amount of money Oritsefemi made from shows, performances and endorsement deals with Mac Dowell and Brandy. Danku was only able to declare N5.5 million at the end of the day. The Lagos State Government says it has cancelled the restriction of movement during the May edition of the monthly sanitation scheduled for Saturday. The Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, said the decision was to allow for a hitch-free inauguration of the incoming Governor of the state, Akinwunmi Ambode, and the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari. The commissioner explained that the cancellation of the restriction on movement would allow Nigerians to fully participate in the inauguration and other planned ceremonies. Bello further stated that the cancellation would allow easy transportation of fuel from tank farms in the state to other parts of the country. The commissioner said, “The Lagos State Government has cancelled restriction of human and vehicular activities during the May monthly sanitation coming up this Saturday as the state prepares for the swearing-in/inauguration ceremony of the new governor. “This cancellation is to allow for a hitch-free swearing

The 75 young people who set out from Kebbi State in solidarity with the President-elect Muhammadu Buhari 17 days ago arrived Abuja yesterday evening at about 7.30pm. The trekkers, who were received at the Zhabu filling station along the Kubwa Expressway by Senator Adamu Aliero, said disclosed that they were 62 when they began the trek from Jega local government area of Kebbi State and when they got to Miama local government area, 13 others joined them, making them 75. They disclosed that they left on May 9, at about 8am. The spokesperson of the group, Mallam Abubakar Bulu, explained that when Buhari was in Kebbi State to campaign, the youth trekked from Jega to Kebbi to witness his campaign. It was while there that they promised to trek from Kebbi to Abuja in his honour if he wins the election. “They are from different local government areas in the state, not just from Jega. First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, today hosted Nigerian children to a party in Abuja, as they mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration. Mrs Jonathan, who noted that the occasion was her last party that would be celebrated with the children and youths in the Presidential Villa, used the occasion to thank them for the respect and love they showed to her during her tenure in office. She urged the children to be good and obedient children to their parents and remain patriotic to the nation. Some of the children who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said they will miss Mrs Jonathan. “I like the way she dances and plays with us whenever we come to the Villa for parties; I pray the new first lady will be dancing with us and giving us gifts during party,” Master Bolaji Oguns, said. Men of Ogun State Special Anti Robbery Squad, led by Officer-in-Charge, Tijani Muhammed, have arrested three pastors and a herbalist for allegedly kidnapping a United State-based Nigerian in the state. A 70-year-old woman, Monilola Lateef, her son, Modiu, and two others were also arrested for alleged armed robbery in Abeokuta, the state capital. Parading the suspects, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, told newsmen that the three pastors and one herbalist belong to a five-man gang of kidnappers, who had been terrorising residents of Ijebu area of the state. Adejobi said the suspects were arrested, Tuesday, at Ita-Marun, Ijebu Ode, by men of the state Anti-Robbery Squad. He said the suspects, including Ganiyu Olaiya, Segun Makanjuola, Bisi Akinleye and Bayo Adekunle, were arrested for allegedly abducting a man who just retur-ned to the country from abroad. Three pupils of the same parents and another pupil were killed by thunderstorm in Gure, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, between 12 midnight and 1am on Wednesday. Apart from the four dead female pupils, some others were said to be unconscious and had been rushed to the hospital for treatment. The source said the three children of same parents and the fourth, who came to pass the night with the family, were sleeping when the thunderstorm broke into the wall of the house in which they were sleeping.
