Police foil kidnap attempt, kill 4 in Abia

The Police in Abia State have foiled an attempt to kidnap a businessman and killed four gunmen at Uratta community in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government of the state.

It was learnt that a gang of kidnappers were to meet at the Uratta Primary School, Isiala Ngwa North local council, where they were alleged to be plotting to kidnap a farm produce merchant in the area. Acting on a tip-off, Police stormed the area but the gang opened fire on sighting the Police who responded and killed four of the gang members.
The victims include Chijioke Monday who is a relation of their proposed victim; Chimezie Olileanya, a Political Science student of the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri; and Gabriel Nwakudu whose INEC Voters card was found on him.
Items recovered from the gang include; one double barrel shot gun with a live cartridge in the chamber, one locally-made single shotgun with an empty shell, an axe, seven empty cartridges and various charms, while 20 expended ammunition were found on the scene.
Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ezekiel Onyeke, who confirmed the incident said three other members of the gang are believed to have fled with bullet wounds.
He also said that the Police would deposit their bodies in the mortuary after giving the public the opportunity to try identifying any of the criminals.
The Police spokesman appealed to the public not to hesitate to volunteer useful information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing members of the gang.
