Archbishop Martins advises Buhari on Boko Haram

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Adewale Martins, has condemned the continuous loss of the lives of innocent Nigerians in the hands of the Boko Haram sect.

The Cleric, in his New Year message, said that the recent killing of over 61 Nigerians in multiple bomb blasts in Maiduguri and Adamawa State, were of concern to many Nigerians.
He, therefore, urged the Federal Government to urgently reappraise its strategies in the war against insurgency in the North Eastern part of the country.
Martins also urged the Presidency not to give the populace a false sense of assurance that all was well, when indeed there was still much to be done in safeguarding the lives and properties of Nigerians.
``I feel deeply pained by the recent multiple bomb blasts recorded in parts of Maiduguri and Adamawa State by members of the Boko Haram sect.
``It is very sad and unfortunate that over 60 innocent human lives perished in these dastardly attacks, especially at the threshold of the New Year 2016.
``In view of this, it is obvious that the government needs to take more proactive steps in ensuring that these sect members are completely decimated and rendered incapable of causing more havoc in the land.
``While it is true that some successes have been recorded by the nation’s security agencies in recent times, it is also obvious that the war against terrorism is far from over.
``Indeed, it is necessary that our government, through the security agencies, confronts this truth squarely by engaging in more intelligence gathering and nipping such attacks in the bud,’’ he said.
While condoling with families of the deceased, Martins prayed God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss of their loved ones.
He also urged all Nigerians to be more security conscious in the New Year, and urged Nigerians not to give in to despair, in view of the obvious economic challenges ahead.
The archbishop admonished Nigerians to draw nearer to their creator, who he said, would be able to make the nation great once again. (NAN)
