Suspected crude oil thieves arrested in Delta

The Nigerian Navy has arrested 11 crew members of a vessel, MT Camille, laden with about 4,000 metric tonnes of suspected stolen crude oil at Forcados in Delta State.

Briefing reporters on Friday, the Flag Officer Commanding the Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Suleiman Apochi, reiterated that the Navy had zero tolerance for illegal oil bunkering.
According to him the arrest was made in continuation of the resolve to curtail crude oil theft in the maritime environment in the region where most of the nation’s crude is mined.
He said that preliminary investigations were ongoing and that the Nigerian navy had employed new technologies to curb activities of oil pipeline vandals.
Crude oil theft further depletes Nigeria’s revenue from crude oil in the face of dropped crude oil price.
Nigeria depends largely on crude oil for its revenue, having drifted away from agriculture which was the nation’s economic mainstay before the discovery of crude oil.
The government is, however, making efforts to diversify the economy, with focus returning to agriculture and untapped huge solid minerals.

Buhari Seeks Approval of $75 Million World Bank Loan For Edo

President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the Senate seeking approval of a $75 million World Bank loan on behalf of the Edo State. “I am writing to seek the consideration of the national assembly of Nigeria on approval of a request by the Edo state government‎ to obtain a $75 million credit facility from the World Bank,” the president wrote in a letter read on the floor of the upper chamber by Bukola Saraki, Senate President, on Tuesday.

Zambia shuts schools over typhoid outbreak

Thirty schools in the Zambian capital Lusaka have been closed due to unsanitary conditions following an outbreak of typhoid in the city, the Times of Zambia reported on Thursday. Public Relations Manager for Lusaka City Council, Mulunda Habenzu, said the schools, including both public and privately-run ones, are in Kanyama, a densely-populated shanty town, west of the city, where the water-borne disease has broken out. So far, a 11-year-old girl in one of the schools has died of suspected typhoid while two others have been tested positive for the disease, the official said. The health ministry claims it has scaled up measures to bar the disease from spreading to other parts of the city.
