Mama Died In My Arms – Awolowo’s Daughter

Twenty-four hours after the demise of Yeye HID Awolowo, the matriarch of the Awolowo political dynasty, her last daughter, Tokunbo Awolowo Dounmu, revealed yesterday that her mother died in her arms.
According to her, the family was happy because Mama left them after a praise worship and prayer session.

“She prayed for us. She came in and she prayed for us. We were singing as she was praying. So it was words of prayer that she left us with and there was no sign at all that she was going to leave us.
“As we were preparing for her 100th birthday, I was going through some of the letters that papa wrote to her from prison and the accolades; there were many. Papa also acknowledged in the letters that mama, in her own right, was a powerful woman and a woman of honour.
She said: “I had a wonderful relationship with mama. I am her last child and she has a special place in my heart. The last five months, I have been living here. I am still trying to come to term with her loss. She drew her last breath in my arms.”
On the possibility of converting her centenary birthday celebration to burial, Dosunmu said, “We are looking into that. If anybody asked me if mama will not last till her centenary birthday celebration, I would have argued. I am still trying to come to terms with her loss.”
