Residents worry over resurgence of armed robbery in Onitsha

Residents of Onitsha and its environs have expressed concern over the resurgence of armed robbery in the commercial city.

The armed robbers, it was learned, have now adopted the strategy of laying siege on unsuspecting bank customers.

A source told newsmen that a woman who withdrew money from a new generation bank at New Market road was trailed by to Oguta road by armed robbers operating in a motorcycle who eventually robbed her of the money.

In a another incident, a journalist with New Telegraph Newspapers in Onitsha was, Monday evening attacked by robbers, but managed to escape.

Reporters gathered that the journalist, while on his way home from work, had a flat tyre on 33 Housing Estate Road and was busy changing it when the robbers swooped on him, thinking he had money.

The frustration of not getting money from him was said to have infuriated the hoodlums who beat him up.

Nigeria spent N6.9tn on subsidy in five years – World Bank

Nigeria spent about $35bn (N6.9bn) in the last five years to subsidise petroleum products, the World Bank has said. In its ‘Nigeria Economic Report No. 3’, which was released in Abuja on Tuesday, the bank said fuel subsidy incapacitated the country’s ability to save for the rainy day occasioned by falling crude oil prices in the international market.
