Piracy a threat to entertainment industry- Mc Shakara

A Lagos based comedian, Kenneth Agberia popularly known as “Mc Shakara’’, on Monday said that piracy had continued to be a nuisance to the entertainment industry.

Agberia, who said this in an interview in Lagos said that it was only when the menace was frontally tackled that the industry could get a respite.

“Piracy is killing business and not helping the growth of the industry.

“Piracy has made things difficult for producers after spending much on production of films, music and events.

“Therefore, producers tend to manage cost in order not to lose the market.

“This leads to poor productions, which is due to the frugal productions caused by the fear of piracy, “ Agberia said.

The comedian said that consumers were lamenting about the poor quality of production in all sector of the industry, which had forced consumers to purchase entertainment materials from abroad.

“Government should not only promulgate policies as they are fond of doing, but should also enforce them, this will help in stemming the scourge,” he said.

He urged the Federal Government to support the growth of the industry by kicking hard against piracy with stringent entertainment policies enforcement.

“Government should see the industry as a huge income earner and should spare not any cost in protecting it.

“Government should assist by putting necessary actions in place to ensure that copyright owners enjoyed the fruits of their labour.

“It is not fair or good for some people to spend money on production and allow other people to hijack the benefits, “ he said.

Agberia stressed that the government could only achieve this by working hand in hand with industry stakeholders.
