Oshoala wins maiden BBC female footballer award

Nigeria striker Asisat Oshoala has been announced winner of the maiden BBC Women footballer of the Year award on Tuesday.

Oshoala beat top women stars – Spain’s Verónica Boquete, German Nadine Kessler, Kim Little of Scotland as well as veteran Brazilian star Marta – to win the individual award after raking the highest votes of BBC World Service listeners.

The reigning African Women Footballer of the Year became the first African-based footballer to play in the English Women’s Super League after joining Liverpool Ladies from Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt.

The 20-year-old shone with her superb form at the 2014 U20 Women’s World Cup in Canada, scoring seven goals in six matches. She also helped her country to win the 2014 African Women Championship in Namibia as well as her former club to a domestic double.

The Super Falcons’ forward has been an instant hit since joining the Reds in January, scoring two goals and several assists for the reigning English Women Super League champions.

The former FC Robo starlet will hope to achieve big at the senior international level after her heroics powered Nigeria to her seventh Fifa Women’s World Cup appearance which starts on 6 June in Canada.

Nigeria will open their World Cup campaign against Sweden on Monday, June 8.

A family source, who pleaded not to be named, said he passed away at Bromeo Hospital on Sunday at the age of 75. It was gathered that he had been battling a protracted respiratory-related ailment for some years. Chukwuma, until his death, was the Owelle of Onitsha, a traditional position he inherited from his father in 1996. Coincidentally, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe died 19 years ago on May 11, 1996. Chukwuma had once contested the governorship seat of the old Anambra State at the end of his diplomatic career, but lost. As Owelle, he was sixth in rank to the Obi of Onitsha.

Unemployed man caught for phone theft

An unemployed man, Shola Alhassan, 23, was on Friday arraigned before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court over the theft of a phone valued at N52,000. The accused was arraigned on a one count of stealing. The Police prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Uko, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 12 at 1.30pm, at No 3, Joseph Dosu Road, Badagry, Lagos State. Uko said the accused stole a Samsung S4 phone from one Miss Senyo Balogun. “The victim was walking on the road and was using her phone to listen to music. “The accused, who was on a motorcycle, drove by her side and snatched the phone from her, but fell off his bike so he was caught,” he said. Uko said the offence was punishable under Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence and his counsel, Mr. Akin Adewale, pleaded with the court to grant him bail on liberal terms. Heir to the Afrobeat icon, and international music star, Femi Anikulapo-Kuti has attributed his success to his tutelage under his father, the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti; first as a trainee, and later as a member of his band. He told The Nation that his father was his first critic, adding that when he played his first composition to his father, he asked how people could dance to it.
