Man hangs self in uncompleted building

The Building

A young man has been found dead in an uncompleted building on Sefu Elelede Street in the Ibafo area of Ogun State.

Our reporter learnt that the man, whose name had yet to be known, was found hanged by an electrician who had come to inspect the house.

It was gathered that the deceased, who was found in jeans and shirt, hanged himself in the living room section of the uncompleted structure.

Our reporter gathered that the electrician, identified simply as John, who saw the corpse, raised the alarm.

It was learnt that the owner of the house went to report the matter at the Ibafo Police Division.

Policemen from the division, accompanied by a medical practitioner, were said to have visited the building to remove the corpse.

The doctor reportedly confirmed that the man was dead, and had committed suicide in the building for about five days before the discovery.

When our reporter visited the area, the landlady, who identified herself simply as Okpute, said she had sent the electrician to inspect the structure for necessary electrification work, adding that the worker rushed back to inform her about the gory sight.

She said, “On Wednesday, I called John to inspect my structure and give me the estimate on electrification work of the house. I gave him the key to the compound. The building is fenced and it is a storey building.

“To my surprise, he ran back after some minutes, gasping for breath. He told me that a young man had hanged himself inside the uncompleted house.

“We both went there together and found the man. Then, I went to the police to make a report and they also visited the place. I have never seen such a horrible thing in my life.”

Our correspondent gathered that the body was bloated when it was discovered.

Our reporter learnt that a community leader in Sefu Elelede, Chief Jimoh Morenikeji, and other landlords visited the building to identify who the deceased was, but his face was said to be unfamiliar.

Morenikeji told our correspondent that his community members would work with the police to investigate the matter.

“This is strange. We do not know the young man. We will work with the police to get to the root of the matter,” he said.

It was gathered that the corpse had been deposited in a morgue in the area.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident.

He said the police had yet to ascertain the identity of the young man, adding that his corpse had been put in a morgue.
