Breaking Report! 250 Million Fake Phones Sold In Nigeria Yearly – NCC


The Nigerian Communications Commission revealed on Thursday that about 250 million fake phones are sold in Nigeria annually.
This was made known by the acting Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Umar Danbatta during a stakeholders meeting on ‘Combating Counterfeit and Substandard ICT Devices Programmes in Abuja. He said the substandard products are having a damaging impact on Nigerians in the areas of health, safety and privacy.

“Counterfeiting is a growing economic problem affecting a wide range of products in the ICT sector, mobile phones are especially targeted with some 250 million counterfeits sold annually. This number constitutes about 15% to 20% of the global mobile phone market,” he said.
He added that economic losses of these acts include; loss of revenue, copyright and trademark infringement, unfair competition, loss of tax and loss of employment opportunity.
