Army reinstates 2 500 soldiers, 102 officers

The Nigerian Army has reinstated over 2 500 soldiers and 102 officers who were previously withdrawn from service, Punch reports.
A review panel which began sitting on Monday, August 17, 2015 screened and reinstated the officers, who were either sentenced or facing prosecution in relation to counter-insurgency operations in the North-East.

It was also gathered that the soldiers and officers had commenced retraining at the Nigerian Army Training Centre, Kontangora, Niger State.
A source within the army who anonymously confirmed the development availed thus: “The panel has cleared 2 500 soldiers who were dismissed from their units for minor offences alleged to have been committed under Operation Zaman Lafiya.
“The review panel also cleared 102 officers who were either asked to withdraw, dismissed or facing prosecution for various offences under the operation.”
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, however cautioned that the decision to review disciplinary cases should not be mistaken for a total reinstatement of dismissed and deserter soldiers.
