For those who know Obiora Obiwon, he dumped his lucrative bank job and took to music due to the passion he has for it.
Over the past one week, the urban gospel act, took to the social media with the promise to drop a single from his forthcoming album on his birthday this June.
The new single entitled “Floodgates (The New Overflow),” marks the beginning of a new season for Obiora Obiwon as he clocks 38 years and officially begins to mark 10 years in the music industry.
On June 9, the artiste reflected, “They say it’s my 38th birthday today, but it’s you (My Lord) I celebrate. Thank You for giving me ‘You.’ Thank You for giving me the abundant and eternal life, joy, peace and fulfillment.” Obiwon’s professional music career journey started 10 years ago (2005) with the release of his first EP (short form album) entitled “Get ‘Em Up.”
The EP’s lead single with the same title was remarkable for pioneering the use of three-dimensional animation in Nigerian music videos. In recent times, Obiwon has been noted more for his unshaken resolve to impact the Nigerian gospel music scene, Nigerian youths and the entire society using the medium of his faith-based music.
His transition from the secular Pop/R’n’B genre in 2008 was initially received with mixed reactions but has slowly gained acceptance in recent times, with Obiwon being featured in both faith-based and secular events. Between 2014 and early 2015 alone, Obiwon clinched seven gospel music industry awards for the stellar work on his 2013 album, ‘Gold Water.’ The release of new single “Floodgates (The New Overflow)” gives a foretaste of the 10th anniversary projects, which will include an anniversary album aptly entitled “Floodgates: The Beginning Of The New Overflow.”
On the full album scheduled for a November release, Obiwon further revealed his musical romance with long-time production collaborator Phat-E, credited for past Obiwon hits including “Hail My King”, “Obi Mu O” and the bulk of work on his last two albums. On the new single, Obiwon and Phat-E experiment with a mix of both conventional and unconventional sounds, as well as lyrics rife with symbolism.
#HBD to you buddy!
