Tragedy: Vigilante shoots himself while attempting to scare off hoodlums

Tragedy struck at Osholanke Street in Ebute-Metta area of Lagos as a member of a vigilante team identified as Ogundare Ekundayo, shot himself dead while attempting to scare away hoodlums.

Ekundayo on the fateful day while closing from duty reportedly shot into the air to scare away thieves as it was the norms of the community watch. On firing the shot, the bullet reportedly hit an object and bounced back.
A colleague of the deceased, Fatai Raimi on hearing the shot, reportedly ran to the spot and discovered the lifeless body of Ekundayo.
The incident was however reported at the Denton Police Division while Ekundayo’s corpse was deposited at the Mainland General Hospital mortuary.
In trying to unravel the mistry surrounding Ekunday’s death, Raimi was arrested, though he insisted that he was innocent.
He said, “I have known the deceased for some time now. He was my boss; he recruited me into the vigilance group, but we were employed by the community.
“There were three of us guarding Osholanke Street, but the third person did not come that day because he was ill.
“My master and I were together, but when it was getting to 4am, he went down the street alone.
“I suddenly heard a shot from his gun and I rushed there only to see he had mistakenly shot himself dead.”
An autopsy could not be conducted on the victim as the family insisted on burial. This made the police to release the body to the family while the prime suspect was transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation.
