Idia College, Benin-City, Edo on Friday defeated tournament favourites, Government Girls Secondary School, Bida, Niger, 22-9 to reach the finals of the ongoing 2015 Nestle Milo Secondary School Basketball Championships in Lagos.
The girls from Niger, who were looking good in the competition having beaten Government Secondary School, Adamawa, 26-16, thrashed Government Girls Secondary School, Jogana, Kano but fell to Edo’s skillful brilliance.
The girls from Edo will play St Jude’s Girls Secondary School, Amarata, Bayelsa who defeated Government Secondary School, Numan, Adamawa, 37-16 to book their final ticket.
The final match between the girls from Edo and Bayelsa would be their second meet in the competition with Bayelsa having defeated Edo, 25-19 during the group stage, 25-19.
Coach Philips Ojo of the Edo team told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that it was an achievement for his team to reach the final and he was confident of victory.
”We have played well to reach the final; no doubt, it is going to be tough, having lost to our opponent in the group stage.
”But we have done our homework and we have seen areas where we are lacking, so they will definitely meet a different Edo team at the final,”Ojo said.
Meanwhile Coach Tony Nelson of the Bayelsa team said that he was in the competition to win at the end.
”We are here to win the championship trophy; we were once champions and we have the capability to do it this time around,” Nelson said.
NAN reports that the competition which began on June 1 with six conference champions in the girls category will be decided on Saturday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos. (JAB)
